Give Me Meisel or Give Me Death: Vogue Preview of Spring 1995 Collections

i remember being excited as a kid for the january issue of Vogue and seeing the preview of the spring collections.  new year, new fashions.  this one in particular stands out for me because of the sheer brilliance of Steven Meisel and his cast of models.  you really really don't see editorials like this anymore - especially in American Vogue - so now a little nostalgia definitely goes a long way .....

my dream

if only i could do a portrait session like Francesco Clemente had here with Christy Turlington.  i would die ..... just watch the first few minutes of the clip - it's amazing and beautiful ....

Muse: Tina Chow

to me,  Tina Chow was this kind of post modern asian-european Holly Golightly.  she hung out with Andy Warhol and Basquiat, was photographed by Scavullo and Newton, and even dated Richard Gere.  she had this sense of style that was super chic and sleek and always strikingly fantastic:  simple shirts and pants during the day and sleek black dresses accented with the pitch-perfect accessories for night.  her hair was gamine short and the makeup pretty pared down but still distinctive and alluring.  during the bigger-is-better 1980s, she stood out for all these right reasons.  i remember my mom had this book FLAIR.  it was about the fashion couture collection of Ms. Chow.  she collected everything from Yves Saint Laurent to Chanel to Balenciaga - so you can imagine what that was like.  the book was great because it had these amazing close up shots of all the pieces.  it was interesting to see how she collected and wore those clothes.  it was very particular and specific to her and her own style - she never was this slave to the fashion machine.  which is what i guess makes someone stylish.

Seydou Keita

Seydou Keita was an African photographer who took the most extraordinary black and white portrait photographs of his family and friends.  he would sometimes back his subjects with these really cool curtains of printed fabrics.  there was an amazing depth, soul, and innate style to his photographs.  i remember getting a book of his when i was still in high school and really loving it.  it was just fresh and the subjects were all so beyond amazing.  they all looked so elegant and poised.  i remember he had this fashion moment shortly thereafter- an editorial in Harper's Bazaar and i also think John Galliano paid homage to Mr. Keita's eclectic style with his spring/summer 1998 collection.  it's amazing to see photographs like these, almost like 40 years later.  and they still pack an incredible punch.  no fancy gimmicks or photoshop.  just a beautiful photo.

Devil Baby

meet Devil Baby.  we've known each other on and off for the last few years.  cute guy - you can't really get mad at him 'cause, well, he is a baby.  but he pulls some crazy stunts, that's for sure.  i'm trying to convince him to do a blog or something, at least make it legit.  he agreed.  but then bit my hand.  i think it might be infected.  it's kinda pussing and turning yellow.  it really, really hurts.  oh Devil Baby .......
